WhatsApp Business Pricing in Nigeria (2026): What the October 1 Change Means for You

·6 min read

The short answer

From October 1, 2026, Meta charges for service messages (normal replies to customers) sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform, also called the WhatsApp Business API. Each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, and after that each one is charged at Meta's utility rate for the customer's country. If you only use the free WhatsApp Business app on your phone, nothing changes for you.

First: are you on the app or the API?

What changed on October 1, 2026

Since November 2024, service messages (free-form replies sent within 24 hours of a customer's last message) have been free on the WhatsApp Business Platform. From October 1, 2026, Meta charges for them at the same per-message rate it uses for utility messages in each market. Utility templates sent inside that 24-hour window also become chargeable. The change is worldwide, not just in Nigeria.

How much it costs in Nigeria

Nigerian press coverage has put the utility rate for Nigerian numbers at roughly ₦14 per message, with marketing messages costing several times more. Meta sets its rates in US dollars and updates them from time to time, so check Meta's official WhatsApp rate card for the current figure.

The 1,000 free messages a month

Every business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages each month. The allowance resets monthly and doesn't roll over. For many small businesses, such as a salon, a boutique or a gym, 1,000 replies a month covers most or all of their customer conversations, so the real cost may be small or nothing.

Important: add a payment method

Meta asked every business on the WhatsApp Business Platform to attach a valid payment method to its WhatsApp Business Account by September 30, 2026. Without one, Meta stops delivering service messages once they become chargeable. You can add a payment method in Meta Business Suite under WhatsApp Manager's payment settings.

What this means if you use MessyChat

With MessyChat, your WhatsApp Business Account stays yours, so Meta bills its message fees directly to that account, separately from your MessyChat subscription. Make sure a payment method is attached in your Meta account so replies keep being delivered. For most small businesses, the 1,000 free messages a month will cover a large share of conversations.
