Two different WhatsApp products, same green logo
A lot of Nigerian business owners assume the free WhatsApp Business app (the one downloaded from the Play Store) and the WhatsApp Business API (the one platforms like MessyChat connect to for automation) are the same thing with different names. They are not. They are two separate products, and understanding the difference matters before connecting any number.
What changes when you register a number for the API
When a phone number is registered to the WhatsApp Business API to power automated replies, it stops working inside the regular WhatsApp Business phone app. This is not a MessyChat limitation, it is how the platform works for every provider, MessyChat, Wati, Respond.io, Twilio, or anyone else. The number becomes reachable through the API integration instead of the app on your phone.
Meta does offer a newer feature called Coexistence that can, in some cases, let a number stay usable in the Business app and the API at the same time, but it has its own eligibility requirements and is not automatically available to every number.
The 24-hour reply window
Another real platform rule, not specific to any provider: free-form replies are only allowed within 24 hours of a customer's last message. After that window closes, a business can only reach that customer again with a pre-approved template message. If a customer goes quiet, the business has to wait for them to message again, automated or not.
What this means before you connect a number
- Decide whether to register your existing business number (taking it off the native app, unless Coexistence applies) or use a separate number just for automated replies.
- Choose a number you're comfortable being managed through an API integration going forward, switching back later isn't instant.
- Know that the 24-hour reply rule applies no matter which platform you automate with, it's WhatsApp's rule, not the provider's.
How MessyChat handles the setup
MessyChat uses Meta's own Embedded Signup flow, a guided popup where a business owner connects their number directly through Meta's official process, no manually hunting for a Phone Number ID or pasting webhook URLs. The tradeoffs above are real and worth knowing, but the connection step itself takes a few minutes.
